Como, with its enchanting lake, is one of the most magnetic corners of Northern Italy – a city with ancient Roman roots, the majestic Duomo di Como cathedral, narrow medieval streets and a refined heritage in the textile industry, especially in the production of silk. Other celebrities who own properties around the lake include Madonna, Richard Branson, and designers Gianni Versace and Donatella Versace. More recent or less-mentioned names include actor Sylvester Stallone, as well as footballer Cristiano Ronaldo, who is reported to own a luxury property by the lake. Over the years, the area has also been favoured by many other artists, businessmen and aristocrats, although not all of them publicly reveal their ownership. This is all part of Como’s image as an exclusive and somewhat hidden haven for the world’s elite.

Como is easily accessible from Milan – fast trains to Como S. Giovanni or a convenient car route, and within the region ferries connect the towns along the lake. Our practical advice: book ferry and boat tickets in advance during peak season, bring comfortable walking shoes and a camera for the impressive panoramas, and if you’re looking for peace and quiet – avoid the centre of Bellagio at lunchtime.
