Museo Civico Archeologico Paul Jove Como

The first exhibition of curios, antique scientific instruments and was converted into two rooms of the Liceo Classico citizen, after a circular in 1837 in which the archduke Raineri, Viceroy of the Lombardo-Veneto calls to activate toilet technology where collect any natural product, antiques or an industry. The collections will soon be expanded thanks to numerous donations and the building became insufficient to contain them. Then in 1871 the City established a Commission for the formation and preservation of the Civic Museum in 1897 which led to the inauguration of its present location in the building that had been the town residence of the Counts Giovio, rented in 1894. The building, dating from the late Middle Ages, underwent some changes in the sixteenth century by Benedict of Jupiter, but assumed its present appearance, which meets the standards of the late baroque Lombard, with John the Baptist in the eighteenth century. Even the frescoes on the floor reflects the tastes of the eighteenth century as Perrone room is entirely decorated with mythological scenes by Giovan Battista Rodriguez, the Sala Barelli by false architecture created by Joseph Coduri Vignola. Leased, as was said at the end of the nineteenth century as home to the Museo Civico, was then purchased by the city of Como in 1913. The collections at the beginning of '900, consisted of very heterogeneous materials, of which it gave a better system over many years with the acquisition of new spaces, starting with the establishment in 1932 of the Historical Museum Garibaldi in 'adjoining Palazzo Olginati, until the opening of the Civic Art Gallery in Palazzo Volpi (by Diaz) in 1989, and the most recent renovation and construction. The growth of the archaeological collections was very quick from the beginning of the century, thanks to the work of distinguished scholars and local researchers, with the effort of digging and research carried out within the museum leads to a continuous updating of collections and knowledge.
